Mary Powley, the President of Pelham Art Association since 1995, passed away March 30, 2023. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, friends, fellow artists, and followers. She made an impact on everyone who met and got to know her.
Mary studied at Sir Sanford Fleming School of Fine Arts and Niagara College. She continued to study with many well-known Canadian and American artists. Mary liked to experiment with different styles and subject matter; much of her art was an extension of her garden. Her approach to art was the same as her approach to life: “What you send out in the way of thoughts, energy, love and caring for others, always comes back”.
Mary is well known in the art community. She gave many years to the Pelham Art Association. She had a booth at art events such as Pelham Art Festival, South Niagara Art Studio Tours, Fireman’s Park and many others. Mary also had annual solo shows in the Festival Room, of the Pelham Public Library.
Mary was a woman of few words. Yet her wisdom, techniques, and love of the arts was freely shared with many. She was always available with helpful suggestions, whether it was about a piece of art or preparing for art shows and events.
Her sudden passing is a great blow to the art community, the association, and no doubt to the many others who benefited from her mentoring and her friendship. The Pelham Art Association sends our sincere condolences to Morris, all of her family and friends, near and far. May your memories of Mary and her breathtaking artworks bring you comfort and peace always.
